Let’s Talk about Communication

Hello, friends!

If you've had a chance to read my 'about Lindsey' page, you can see that I'm a communications major.  I'm so passionate about my major and my concentration in public relations and leadership and today I'd like to share a little with what I'm doing in my major.  I hope that I can give you an idea into what we do in the communications department and why I just LOVE it so much!

First of all, the communications field at William Woods University is grounded in communication studies, and each student chooses a concentration in one or more of the following: public relations, digital film-making, journalism, broadcasting or speech.  We learn all aspects of communication to submerge ourselves in the current issues and practices that professionals are dealing with.  With my concentrations of public relations and leadership, I learn all about media relations, writing press releases, and so many leadership skills.  It's so fun!  Now that you know more about what I'm studying, let me tell you about all the fun classes I've taken towards my major.

One class I'd like to share with you about is Visionary Leadership.  Every class period, we would discuss a principle of leadership.  It was fun to give input and talk about when we have seen the principle in action or when we have actually applied it.  All of the principles had memorable names, and my favorite was "Big Rocks First."  In that class period, we learned about time management and putting our biggest priorities first.  It really helped me learn to be a better and more effective leader, and I had a great time applying my new skills.

Next, I'll let you know about one of my other favorite classes of all time, Gender Communications.  Just like Visionary Leadership, we had a lot of discussion about real life experiences.  We talked about masculine and feminine communication styles, why they are conflicting, and how to combat the differences.  I felt this was a very interesting and helpful class because I'll soon be out in the professional world communicating with all sorts of men and women with different styles than my own!

magazines

Reading magazines for inspiration can hardly be considered homework! These are a few I look through for ideas.

The last class I want to share about is my current favorite of Feature and Magazine writing.  The main goal of the class is to learn about the magazine industry and writing/producing our own magazine in the semester!  It's so exciting!  I love learning about advertisements, columns, features, and the artwork that goes into a magazine.  This has been one of the most challenging classes I've had so far, but my professor Aimee Sapp makes it fun and achievable (Shout out to Aimee, you're my favorite professor of all time!).  My magazine is going to be all about DIY projects and upcycling!  Some of my classmates are covering travel, fashion, and fitness, too.

These are only a few of the classes I've taken for my major, but I could go on all day if you let me!  I really enjoy what I'm studying and I hope you'll find something that inspires you, too!  My advice for incoming students would be to find what you really like to do and look for a way to apply it.  I love going to class and doing my work because I love the content and the projects that we complete.  WWU has so many majors to choose from, and we all get hands-on experience during our classes.  That's one of the many perks of our school.  You get the opportunity to try it out and have a personal learning experience, and then you can decide if it's something you want to pursue!

If you have any questions, don't be afraid to comment!  I'd be happy to ramble on about communications! :)

Thanks for reading, and have a great weekend!
