The Glorious Ones!

This last weekend, the William Woods University Theatre Department performed their first mainstage show of the year, a musical titled The Glorious Ones. The show told the story of a 17th-century commedia dell’arte theatre group. Commedia dell’arte is an old, comedic style of theatre in which the actors improvise almost all of their lines!

The Glorious Ones featured a cast of seven students: Stephen Chamineak (senior), T.J. Green (junior), Maggie Hunter (senior), Melissa Williams (sophomore), Joe Merlotti (junior), Julia Carney (freshman), and Michael Dodson (graduate assistant). At first I wasn’t quite sure what to expect because this cast was significantly smaller than any of the other musicals I’ve seen at William Woods, but I ended up loving the smaller dynamic. Each actor had his/her own solo song and played an integral part of the story. In my opinion, giving every single member in the cast a chance to shine in his or her own right really strengthened the entire performance.

I began my career at William Woods as a theatre major, but eventually I discovered my love of communications and switched my main focus. I kept theatre as my minor, though, and I still participate in as many shows as I can. I have had to skip a few productions here and there when my communications classes kept me too busy, but until now I have always made time for the musicals. This year, I couldn’t audition because I’m not living in Fulton. (I’m back at The Lake of the Ozarks this semester to work on my internships.) I have to admit, it felt VERY weird to sit in the audience and watch while my fellow theatre students sang and danced up onstage! I’m definitely looking forward to walking the boards with them again when I come back next semester!
