3 Elements of the Coolest Dorm Room

If you're like me, your room is a place of peace and sanctity. It's the place in which you can retreat and relax. Rejuvenate and create the space that really represents who you are. You've probably spent the last 17 to 20 years of your life creating a space in your home that is an extension of who you are--a pure representation of your personality. Odds are, there are still some childhood effects in existence that some may find embarrassing to take to school with them. Moving to college is your chance to create a new space (along with your roommate) that is authentically who you are right now! Here are some tips to making the best of your new pad!

Lighting: The lights in residence hall rooms can be industrial.

  • Bring your own lamp - having a lamp can create a warm, homey feel within your room. Having a little lower key light will allow you to relax and keep the stress level low in your new room.
  • Hang Christmas lights (LED only) - You can choose from an wide variety of colors and styles. These colors will cast a certain feel over the room. Find the color you love and give it a try!
  • Allow sunlight to flood in during the day - having thick curtains will allow you to sleep in on those weekend mornings. However, waking up in the morning and keeping your energy up throughout the day is much easier when you let the natural energy of the sun flow into your space!

Wall Decor:

  • Posters - I would suggest getting a couple new posters of things/people/places that you love. There are many online resources to get new posters and local stores will carry them for a low price. Hang your posters with sticky tack, NOT push pins or tape (those things will damage the wall and lead to a fine).
  • Hang a sheet - hanging a colored sheet on the wall is the college equivalent to a paint job. Like your lighting decision, the color of the walls will represent the feel you want to give the room.
  • Use your own art - perhaps you have an art class your freshman year, hang the projects from classes on your walls. It will encourage you to create art that you are proud of.

Entertainment: How do you prefer to entertain - Movies? Music? Games?

  • Television - coordinate with your future roomie (your Residential Life office should let your know). Who will bring the television? Will you need a DVD or Blu Ray player? Surround sound? All things to think about.
  • Speakers - this one is near and dear to my heart. I love music. Having good sound quality is key to entertaining. People love to listen to music when they hang out. Be careful with the power of the bass and volume though, you don't want you neighbors to get upset when you are pounding their wall with your subwoofers.
  • A place to sit - having plenty of comfortable places to sit is crucial to finding comfort in your room. A futon or moon chair is very modern and provides a comfortable place for you and your guests to sit down and relax.

A Rare January Day

Missouri weather strikes again! From time to time Mother Nature likes to toss a curve ball to those of us who least expect it. Well, on this day, that curve ball came in the form of a sunny, 60 degree day in the middle of "winter". In the dull winter, a day like today brings forth an positive, optimistic disposition among the William Woods community. Everyone is relaxed, happy, and smiling. This level of happiness is not a rarity here at WWU, however, when you're given a day like today you can't help but appreciate the smiles, compliments, and unspoken level of happiness that lives within the community. I wanted to take some time out of my day to say that I hope you are all having a great day that will turn into a great week, then a great month, all the way up to a great year. Share your satisfaction and cheer with those around you. Remember, life always contains a silver lining, your responsibility is to find it.

Keep On Keeping On

Today has been a full day of activities, classes, and practice, and it's not over yet! I woke up this morning to my cell phone playing the song "I See Fire" by Ed Sheeran at 7 am, letting me know that it was time for the day to begin! I rolled out of bed fully aware of the days obligations consisting of class at 8 am, 9 am, noon, and 1 pm, my University Ambassador responsibilities at 2 pm, and then practice from 3 pm to 6 pm. It is on days like this that we find ourselves overwhelmed by the sheer quantity of commitments we must follow through with. Dealing with stress is an important part of learning to function in the adult world. Here are some tips and tricks that I find useful on those days when I feel overwhelmed.

1. Take things one step at a time! - when you have a lot to accomplish, you must focus on one task at a time and do your best at that very moment. It is easy to let your focus slip onto panicking about how much you have to do. Instead, focus on what you are currently getting done.

2. Focus on the here and now. - if you have many responsibilities to take care of, they can distract you from the here and now. Stay focused and use those thoughts and energy for later projects to keep your motivation up and your motor running.

3. Feel fortunate to have so many opportunities! - it's easy to get down and have a negative attitude about everything that you have to do. You have the opportunity to become better in many different aspects of life! Be the positive light shining down on the situation. Attitude is everything. Keep a smile on your face. It will stimulate creativity and affect those around you in a positive way.

and finally...

4. Plan some down time. - we are only able to stay focused and on task for so long. It is okay, even healthy, to schedule 20 minutes of down time to grab some coffee from the Owl's Nest and relax for a few minutes! Allowing yourself to decompress for a bit can help spur you on to a victorious day!

Halloween at WWU

Happy Halloween to everyone! I hope you all enjoyed your spooky, hilarious, and thrilling holiday festivities! All around Fulton, Missouri you could find jack-o-lanterns, togas, princesses, nerds, athletes, skeletons, and the occasional astronaut. We will never be too old to dress up and enjoy a night out with friends! Be it catching a movie with Student Alumni Council, the American Sign Language department, or the Jesters, to attending class in your costume, there is always a way for you to enjoy the Halloween festivities at William Woods!

Below are some pictures of my teammates and I dressed up on Halloween night, it was a great time with the best friends a guy could ask for!
